First it is important to realize that one can be a medical assistant without certification. Typically employers look for a high school diploma. Certification as a medical assistant is a good option for many as it can lead to better jobs, higher pay and more skill in your career.

Second, you should know that there are several agencies that accredit medical assistants and similar professions:

The following are directions to become a CMA in Alabama with the AAMA.

      1. Complete an Accredited Medical Assisting Program

Many schools in Alabama and online offer medical assisting programs. You will need to compare  the costs, academic prerequisites, length of program, topics covered and practicum requirements.

A certified medical assistant program in Alabama will also require you to complete a practicum- a supervised, unpaid internship as a part of the program.

      2. Apply for the CMA exam & pay the exam fee.

The application can be found here. The CMA Certification Department will contact you normally via email within 30 days after you have mailed your application to notify you of your application status.

      3. Schedule Your CMA exam

After your application has been processed, you will receive instructions via email no later than 20 days before your 90 day testing period begins. You will use the scheduling permit emailed to you to make an appointment for the exam. You will also need to bring the permit with you to your exam appointment.

      4. Study

The exam is difficult and will require you to study appropriately. Your program should supply you with review materials related to the content of the exam and practice exams. You can also inquire about review courses offered at your school or the local CMA chapter (listed below).

      5. Pass the Exam And Become Certified

If you pass the exam, you will receive a Certified Medical Assistant Certificate. You will also be listed on the CMA Status Website – http://www.aama-ntl.org/employers/verify.aspx.
